A Study on the Symptom Distress in Cancer Chemotherapy Patients


Abstract
This study was designed to identify the symptom distress patterns in receiving chemotherapy. The identification of symptom distress patterns would provide basic information to oncology nursing care.
The subjects for this study were 61 patients receiving chemotherapy at one university hospital located in Kwang-Ju.
The data were gathered from July 20 to August 30, 1994., through interviews by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by frequency, mean & S.D., t-test, ANOVA, using a SAS program. The results of this study were summarized as follows:
I . The mean score of perceived symptom distress was 34.2 with a score range from 5 to 66.
2.The priority of symptom distress were anorexia, nausea, alopecia, vomiting, and high fever.
3. The level of symptom distress was higher amount of symptom distress than pain of symptom distress.
4. The level of symptom distress on general characteristic was significantly different in variables such as age(F=3.39, P=.014), sex(t=4.62, P=.035), job(F=4.02, P=.002), and charger of the medical fee(F=2.43, P=.046).
